Updates On Child Safety Standard Rules In Favor of WCMA

On September 12th, the D.C. Circuit Court ruled in favor of the Window Covering Manufacturers Association (WCMA) in its lawsuit challenging the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) rule, A Safety Standard for Operating Cords on Custom Window Coverings.

What this means for the industry

All companies manufacturing, distributing, or selling window covering products in the United States must continue to operate according to the voluntary window covering safety standards, ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2018. On June 1, 2024, the updated window covering standard, ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 will go into effect, requiring the vast majority of all window covering products sold in the United States to be cordless or to have inaccessible or short cords.  However, the standard does permit the use of continuous loop operating systems so long as a compliant tension device is used to prohibit the formation of a hazardous loop.  The industry’s voluntary standard has been repeatedly modified since 1996 to further enhance child safety as technology and innovation improved product design.
